Setting up an Istanbul airport layover eSIM (2026 rules included) solves a problem most transit passengers only notice when they land: the free WiFi at Istanbul Airport (IST) runs out after one hour, and your UK network charges a full day of roaming the moment your phone touches a Turkish mast. A 3GB Turkey eSIM that lasts 30 days costs $5.71 and covers the layover, a night in the city and the return leg through Istanbul weeks later.
This guide covers setup, the Turkish rules that trip travellers up, and what to do if Istanbul is only the middle of a longer trip to Asia.
Istanbul Airport gives passengers a free WiFi pass for one hour. If you do not have a Turkish number, you get a code at one of the WiFi kiosks by scanning your passport (Roamless IST WiFi guide). One hour is fine for a short connection. It is not enough for a six hour wait, a delayed onward flight or a trip into the city.
Your own mobile data is the other option, and that is where UK roaming prices come in.
Turkey is not in EU roaming, even though Istanbul is partly in Europe. UK networks treat it as a long haul destination. EE, for example, puts Turkey in its Rest of World Zone 1 and charges Β£6 for a 24 hour pass or Β£30 for 7 days if your plan does not include it (Saily’s EE roaming summary). Vodafone and O2 have their own day rates, so check your plan.

| Trip | EE roaming | GleeSim Turkey eSIM |
|---|---|---|
| 8 hour layover | Β£6 (one day pass) | 3GB, 30 days: $5.71 |
| Layover out and back, 2 weeks apart | Β£12 (two day passes) | Same 3GB plan covers both |
| One week in Antalya | Β£30 (7 day pass) | 10GB, 30 days: $11.28 |
The eSIM also covers the return layover without a second purchase, as long as it is inside the 30 days.
This is the part that catches people out. First-time activation of a foreign eSIM profile inside Turkey is restricted. You need to scan the QR code and install the eSIM before you leave home, then switch the line on after you land.
If you land without an eSIM installed, eSIM activation at Istanbul Airport is the wrong plan. Use the one hour airport WiFi to message people, and set up an eSIM before your next trip.
Turkey registers every phone by its IMEI number. A phone bought abroad that is used on a Turkish SIM for more than 120 days has to be registered with the telecoms authority (BTK), and the 2026 fee is 54,258 Turkish lira, about $1,260 (Readability’s 2026 IMEI summary). Unregistered phones are then blocked on Turkish networks.
What this means for you:
Not on a normal trip. A UK phone using UK roaming or a travel eSIM keeps working for the length of any tourist visit. Blocking only applies to foreign phones used with a Turkish SIM beyond the 120 day window.
You do not need a VPN to install or use a GleeSim Travel eSIM in Turkey. WhatsApp, Google Maps, Instagram, banking apps and airline apps all work over the data connection as normal. You can still use a VPN for your own privacy reasons, but nothing about the eSIM depends on one.
Istanbul is a common stop on the way to Pakistan, Thailand, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. Each of those countries needs its own data plan, because a Turkey plan works in Turkey only. Two options:
Turkish Airlines runs Touristanbul, a free city tour for international transfer passengers with a connection of 6 to 24 hours at Istanbul Airport, as long as both flights are on the same booking and the ticket number starts with 235 (Turkish Airlines Touristanbul). You still need a visa if your passport requires one. Data on your phone helps here: you can track the tour meeting time, check your gate and message home from Sultanahmet.
Antalya is quieter and cheaper in winter, with daytime temperatures that suit walking the old town and the coast. The best eSIM for Antalya winter 2026 trips is a 30 day plan so a one or two week stay is covered with room to spare. Looking for an Antalya eSIM? Winter stays of one or two weeks fit the 10GB, 30 day plan at $11.28, which covers maps, ride apps, video calls and photos.
Here are the most useful Turkey plans on 28 September 2026:

For a layover, start with the 3GB, 30 day Turkey plan. You can compare every plan and see the network map on our Turkey eSIM page.
GleeSim is a travel eSIM without an app: buy on WhatsApp as a guest, get your QR code in the same chat, and top up there if your layover turns into an overnight stay. Code GLEE10 takes 10% off WhatsApp orders.

Not reliably. Install the eSIM before you fly, then switch it on at IST. First-time activation inside Turkey is restricted.
A 6 to 10 hour layover with maps, messages and a tour uses about 300MB to 1GB. The 3GB plan covers the outbound and return layovers.
Yes. It connects to Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey or TΓΌrk Telekom, with 4G and 5G at Istanbul Airport and across the city.
No VPN is required. Your apps work over the eSIM connection as they do at home.
Yes. GleeSim is a second, data-only line. Your UK SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts.
Install the eSIM at home, switch it on when the wheels touch down, and spend your layover on the tour or the next leg instead of a WiFi kiosk.
